13.0 Karma

Most people understand the basic concept of karma today, but they have no idea about the rich philosophy behind it. Karma is a Sanskrit word that means "action" or more specifically, the result of action. The concept dates back to ancient eastern philosophy and is heavily represented in Hindu beliefs.

The basic idea of karma is that you are repaid for the actions you take during your life. If you do good things you will be repaid with good and if you do bad things you will be repaid with bad. This is the part most people are familiar with.

What many people don't know is that the philosophy of karma ties into reincarnation. If you aren't repaid for your good and bad actions in this lifetime you will be in the next lifetime. In this philosophy, people carry the "sin" of the past lifetime into the next lifetime.

In the discipline of numerology, Karmic Debt Numbers are used to identify the bad being carried into a new life.
You can think of this Debt as a lesson you haven't learned yet. You need to take on burden in your current life in order to correct something you did not do well in a previous life. Some think of this in terms of punishment, but it isn't meant to be that way. Think of it more as learning from something you did wrong in the past.
More importantly, This Debt gives you the opportunity to bring more peace, power, health and happiness into your future lives.

Karma is the belief that one reaps what one sows. In esoteric literature, karma is thought of as the universal law of cause and effect, which is played out over many cycles of rebirth, and so the playing out of karma can take place over many lifetimes. Obviously, this belief system subscribes to the notion of reincarnation: The soul of an individual is reborn, again and again, into different physical bodies, and karma is worked out through each incarnation. In addition, there is both good karma and bad karma.

Karma is a term used to designate thoughts or actions of the past which show up in the present and require retribution, or, to put it colloquially, "payback time". The idea is that all life is connected and so, what you do, say, and think will eventually come home to roost.

The word karma is similar to saying: “What goes around comes around.” Basically, both mean the same thing: that there is some labor of the soul that has to be righted. Karma is a belief that says, quite simply, each of us is responsible for our actions and thoughts.

Karma is not punishment for past or present misdeeds. Karma is the effect of not knowing HOW life works. It is the result of things we have been unable to learn, both now and all the way back to previous generations and lifetimes. These ruts and routines are reaching such climactic proportions, in so many areas of life right now, that it feels as if we are on the brink of disaster one moment, and the brink of breakthrough the next. We are in the process of understanding the cause and effect of our present situation. The laws of karma and the laws of cause and effect are the same – any action or event will produce a response to that action in the form of another event.

In Numerology, there are two types of Karmic Numbers: Karmic DEBTS and Karmic LESSONS.
Needless to say, Karmic Debts hold a bit more weight and Karmic Lessons are less intense than a Karmic Debt.

Karmic Lessons

Karmic lessons are indicated by the numbers missing in your birth name. When a number and its vibration are absent from your birth name, it’s an indication of an energy that you haven’t experienced in a previous life, and so is a vibration missing in your energy field at birth. In this life, you are given the opportunity to experience this energy.

Nonetheless, the missing number or vibration will show up in your life over and over again, until you finally master the energy of that number.

Your karmic lesson number or numbers identify the specific action, thought, or understanding you’ll want to pay attention to in this lifetime. You can think of karmic lessons as a way to learn what’s out of balance in your vibrational pattern or your makeup: Once you know what number or numbers are missing from your name, you’ll know what to work on. It’s kind of a neat system for brining balance to your life. But just think, you might get it together this time! When we make the effort, life flows.

The important thing to remember is that missing numbers represent vibrations missing in your overall essence, kind of like a part of yourself you would want to reclaim so that you might be whole.

Remember, these are karmic lessons, so it’s implied that you’ll be working on your karma with other people in the picture, very likely karmic souls from another life.

Karmic Debt

The Karmic Debt can also be referred to as a Testing Number, Warning Number or Hidden Number. Basically, the Karmic Debt number indicates that you have a debt to pay in this lifetime for the actions you performed in a former lifetime. Karmic debt is a kind of a debt people accumulates, whether it’s a debt of abuse of love or of power. Similarly, numbers 13, 14, 16, and 19 (karmic debt numbers) are about selfishness in love, power, work, or freedom in past lives, and indicate a total disregard for others, for consequences, or moral concern. The idea is that if you were self-serving and lazy, or cruel, irresponsible, or greedy in the past life, now, in this lifetime, is your chance to set the record straight.

When you see a Karmic number, it’s telling you that you’ll experience significant challenges or difficulties with a particular "topic" in your life. The Karmic Numbers are 13, 14, 16, and 19.

So while this can be seen as a harsh “uh-oh!” it’s actually really nice to know that the struggles you’re most likely experiencing over and over again can be given a name and a reason for being.

It’s rather like having credit card debt. You have to decide to forgo that vacation, eating out, or buying that expensive car because you have to – instead – use that money to incrementally pay off your credit card. If you don’t pay it off, the debt keeps accumulating, the interest rate goes up, and the debt consumes your life. The collections service starts calling. The Repo Man shows up. You get the picture.

So when you see a Karmic number, it simply indicates that you have a debt to pay. Knowing the nature of the debt you’re paying is a bonus and a positive thing. When you can name it, you can in some ways embrace it and do something about it.

Remember, a karmic debt is owned because of something that occurred in a past life where there was misuse of power or love _ and now its payback time. In other words, some action you took in a past life is now requiring you to set matters right. Chances are you’re already familiar with this concept, whether because the same people keep showing up, or the same situations keep repeating themselves. Either way, it’s clear you’re meant to be learning something.

The Karmic Debt Numbers

The karmic debt numbers 13, 14, 16, and 19, are defined as follows:
  • The number 1 in each number signifies that a selfish abuse of power occurred in a previous life. The number that follows, the number following the 1, indicates the type of misuse of power that must be resolved in the current life:
    • The number 3 in 13: misuse of creativity energy, artistic talent and joyfulness that turns into frivolity and superficiality.
    • The number 4 in 14: misaligned work enery, an authority over others. Discipline, hard work, accountability, and stability turn into rebelliousness and indulgence, a past life of partying and self-indulgence rather than responsibility, all in an effort to escape what’s required.
    • The number 6 in 16: imbalance of love energy. Love and commitment have been forsaken. Past lives may have included incidents of infidelity, abandonment or failure to accept family responsibilities.
    • The number 9 in 19: issues of spiritual power. Wisdom, spiritual knowledge, and power have been used for personal gain that took precedence over serving others.
We write these numbers as 13/4, 14/5, 16/7, and 19/1, because the reduced number or the base number tells where the debt lies and what the remedy is for releasing the debt. As far as the kind of influence, each of the four Karmic Debt numbers has very different properties, but they are always associated with the single-digit number they represent. The 13 is a 4 (since 1 + 3 = 4), and has to do with effort. The 14 is a 5 and has to do with freedom. The 16 is a 7 and has to do with spiritual growth, and the 19, being a 1, has to do with independence.

  • The following is a brief summary of the characteristics of the numbers 1,3,4,6 and 9
    • The 1 is the most independent, unconventional, and individualistic of all numbers. It represents the beginning, the source, the innovator, the originator, and the uniqueness of the individualist.
    • The 3 is the most playful of all numbers. It is creative, inspirational, and motivating. Self expression and communication are it's central qualities. It is a happy-go-lucky number; both optimistic and enthusiastic.
    • The 4 is the most practical of all numbers, with a sharp eye for details. It is orderly, systematic, methodical, precise, reliable, dependable. It does what it says it will do...is honest, trustworthy, and without artifice.
    • The 6 is the most loving of all numbers. It is harmonious will all other numbers, and is committed, caring, sympathetic, protective, and nurturing, as well as responsible, self-sacrificing, and undemanding. It is domestic, marriage and family oriented, and community conscious. It is the teacher and the healer.
    • The 9 is the most humanitarian of all numbers. It is effort and sacrifice without the need for reward. It is giving, sharing, loving, and caring. It is the statesperson, politician, lawyer, writer, philosopher and idealist. It is worldwide consciousness, genius, and a synthesizer.
So why are these particular Karmic Debt Numbers chosen? It’s because through objective empirical research over eons, those numbers have consistently shown to directly relate to much higher than average adversity and burden. These numbers then are heavily associated with inherent challenges and symbolize energy that is greatly in need of balancing.

Karmic Debt is a result of abuse of the gifts given in a prior lifetime, the hurt or damage that one has inflicted on others, hedonism, illicit love affairs, immorality, arrogance, impatience, fear of change, intemperance, stubbornness, etc. In order to clear the way for a successful and contented existence on Earth, a Karmic Debt is the Universe insisting that a person making a thorough and concentrated effort to bring their life into balance giving way to a higher level of consciousness, the evolution of the Soul.

Karmic debt energy is definitely intense, but like all numbers, a person's choice determines how the vibration plays out in their life. Karmic Debt Numbers work through the emotions and don't necessarily have to show outward manifestation. However, if a person's actions are destructive and disingenuous, a karmic debt cycle of any length will suddenly give rise to mental, physical and spiritual destruction, outward manifestations. For that reason, when you get an early warning signal it's time to meditate, pray, and give thoughtful consideration before reacting or making decisions.

During a Karmic Debt Cycle, it's no longer acceptable to continue down the same road! Keep in mind you are never forced to change, you can power through whatever circumstances using the same mode of behavior, but ultimately you reap what you sow, and during a Karmic Debt Cycle what you reap is distressing.

The most strenuous Karmic Cycles are those that last two years or more, and, if situations are not handled in an appropriate manner, the severity increases over the years. A person that has grown in consciousness immediately becomes aware of emotional changes and attempts to identify and circumvent a major catastrophe thus, limiting suffering. If you look at a Karmic Debt as an educational and enlightening period rather than punishment, the lesson(s) won't require as much effort, work, or thought.

As you probably guessed, a Karmic Debt Cycle is absolutely not a time to move forward with any new ventures, or take unnecessary risks! Doing so will definitely give rise to failure/losses, or even death. A Karmic Debt Cycle is purposely intended for inner analysis, reestablishing the link with the Source and Self, reviewing one's plans/goals, and bringing one's life into balance. Eventually a Karmic Debt Cycle will open up the possibility for you to gradually advance toward your goal(s), that is, if awareness, understanding, tolerance, and gratitude are realized.

To recap:

Karmic Debt 13/4

This past life karmic debt comes by wasting chances and talents in a past life and not getting vital things done, or by bestowing unwanted burdens on others such as misery and pain. In addition, this karma occurs, if a person reallocates the duties or activities onto others.

Those with the 13 Karmic Debt may experience much frustration, and will have to work very hard to accomplish any task. Think of it as a consequence of a previous lifetime dominated by laziness, taking advantage of others and similar bad choices.

Obstacles arise for those with a 13 Karmic Debt and must be overcome time and time again. One may often feel burdened and frustrated by the futility of their efforts -- there may be a desire to surrender to the difficulties and simply give up on the goal. But success is well within reach; one simply must work hard and persevere in order to reach the goal. Many highly successful people in all walks of life, including business, art and athletics, have a 13 Karmic Debt.

The key to succeeding with the 13 is focus. A temptation with the 13 is to take shortcuts, but too often, that easy success doesn't come, causing regret and the desire to give up. The result is a poor self-image and the belief that one is incapable of amounting to very much. Order is essential to success with the 13 Karmic Debt. You must maintain a schedule, follow through, keep your environment neat and under control and never procrastinate.

So if you have a 13 in your chart, roll your sleeves up and put your nose to the grindstone, success just might be one step away.

The number 13 means you can expect your life to be filled with obstacles and a great deal of frustration. Laziness will be your downfall because it is going to take a lot of effort, focus and determination to be successful in any endeavour. But even with a seemingly endless supply of problems, you can still come out on top.

When you find 13s in your life, you need to buckle down and give your all to any project that comes along. Even if you feel like nothing ever works out, it rests on you to put in the extra effort.

Karmic Debt 14/5

This past life karmic debt occurs, by misusing liberty from a past life. For example, by taking independence at someone else's outlay and participating in other destructive activities that undermined own soul growth.

The 14 Karmic Debt arises from previous lifetimes during which human freedom has been abused. Those with a 14 Karmic Debt in their Numerology chart are now forced to adapt to ever-changing circumstances and unexpected occurrences. There is an acute danger of becoming a slave to your own freedom through the abuse of drugs or alcohol and overindulgence in food and sex. You must put the reins on yourself. Modesty in all affairs is crucial to overcoming this 14 Karmic Debt.

Also important is the need to maintain order in life and to establish your own emotional stability. You must be willing to adapt to the unexpected twists and turns of life while still maintaining your focus on your goals and dreams. Flexibility and adaptability are at the very core of this struggle, and orderliness in one's immediate environment is crucial to maintaining clarity and focus.

The main key to the 14 Karmic Debt, however, is commitment. Life will resemble a rollercoaster ride, but it will always travel in the right direction, so do not give up on your dreams and goals. Those with the 14 Karmic Debt can experience life to the fullest as long as they maintain a high dream.

The key issue with a 14 Karmic Debt number is freedom, and that there is too much of it in your life. Overindulgence and addiction is the main problem for someone dealing with 14s, and self-control is the trait you have to work on the most in order to overcome these issues.

Take everything in moderation and never allow any one part of your life to dominate. There will seem to be a lot of unexpected distractions, but you can get through them with focus and control. Stay committed to your goals and don’t let the temptations get you side-tracked.

Karmic Debt 16/7

This past life karmic debt comes from a previous life's unusual or dishonest love affairs, which caused a huge distress to others.

The 16 Karmic Debt represents destruction of the old and birth of the new. The 16 is about the fall of the ego and all that it has built for itself; it is a cleansing. All that has been constructed and all that serves to separate the person from the source of life is destroyed. Through the 16, reunion with the great spirit is accomplished.

This can be a painful process, because it usually comes after much ego inflation. Life presents challenges to your grand plans and you tend to make choices that seem specifically designed to break down what you have previously built -- a self- destructive career choice or an act of stupidity that ruins an otherwise wonderful relationship, for example.

The 16 Karmic Debt is a lost battle and you will likely feel humbled in the face of the collapse that follows. But this humility is the key to later success, because you will learn to follow the intimations of a higher reality, approaching life with an entirely new awareness. It is a life much the better for the fall.

Those with the 16 Karmic Debt must be careful of egoism. Very often, those with the 16 use their highly intuitive and refined intellect to look down upon others, and view the rest of the world as inferior, leading to acute alienation and loneliness.

When the 16 is in one of the Core numbers, this process of destruction and rebirth is a continuous cycle that actually serves to bring you into higher consciousness. The 16 Karmic Debt can be a path of progress and great spiritual growth if it is looked at properly.

The idea that 16 brings destruction can be a little daunting but you have to realize that destruction is necessary for creation and rebirth. Personal ego is the biggest problem for people with 16s and you’ll find that life constantly tries to bring you down in order to show you a more humble outlook.

As long as you see your problems as opportunities for change, and that there is always going to be something new on the horizon after something else comes to an end, you can work past your karma to find new successes.

Karmic Debt 19/1

This past life karmic debt is a result of misusing wisdom, spiritual knowledge, and power for personal gain in a past life.

Those with the 19 Karmic Debt must learn independence and the proper use of power. You will be forced to stand up for yourself, and often be left standing alone. Difficulties will be faced and overcome through personal struggle.

One of the central lessons for people with the 19 Karmic Debt is that you stubbornly resist help. Much of your independence is actually self-imposed -- you simply don't want to listen to others, or to accept the help or advice of others. The 19 Karmic Debt can become a self-imposed prison if you do not open up to the reality of interdependence and the mutual need for love.

The most important lesson for the 19 Karmic Debt is: while you seek to stand on your own feet, you are still a human being, deeply connected with others and in need of the support, assistance and human understanding that all people need. Sometimes you just need to reach for it.

This is the last Karmic Debt number, and it represents an inability to ask others for help and excessive independence. Many of the struggles you come across will only be a problem if you refuse to ask for assistance and stubbornly insist on going it alone.

Once you learn that even the most independent person will require a little support from others through life, you’ll find the karmic lessons of 19 will disappear.

People with this number seem to always get out of life what they put into it – no more no less. If your date of birth adds up to 19, then you possess this quality.

Where Are Karmic Debt Numbers Found

One thing to keep in mind with these karmic numbers is that it’s believed that anyone with one of these numbers has taken on an additional burden in order to learn the necessary lesson.
The numbers that carry a Karmic Debt are 13, 14, 16 and 19. These double-digit numbers take on a great significance when they are found in your core numbers (day of birth, life path, expression, heart’s desire and personality), and in the various cycles during the course of lifetime.

The Life Path Number is the single most important number in your Numerology chart, because it acts as a blueprint outlining how your life will play out. Opportunities and challenges faced along the way are heavily influenced by the Life Path ... as is your general character and course of action as you embark on life's journey.

While your Life Path number plots your life's lessons and how you handle them, your Expression Number is all about your natural strengths and weaknesses given to you at your time of birth. Often referred to as the Destiny number, as it aims for your goal in life, this number is the foundation on which your Life Path can flourish.

What are the reasons behind your actions? What do you really want in life and love? This is where your Heart's Desire Number comes in to play, and it signifies the reasons behind the choices you make in all aspects of your life, from your career to your relationships -- the burning fire within.

Your Personality Number is the first impression people get of you. It represents the parts of yourself that you are most ready and willing to reveal, and helps you determine just how much you reveal, and to whom. This number acts as a buffer, screening out some people and situations you don't want to deal with while welcoming the things in life that relate to your inner nature.

Your Birth Day Number is just that -- the day on which you were born -- and it reveals a certain talent that will eventually find its place on your Life Path.
While it's the most insignificant of the core numbers, the Birth Day number puts a timestamp on the person you are today according to one single aspect that will ultimately impact your life in a big way. Just as you were destined to be born on this specific day, you have been given a certain special gift as a result.

Certain cycles in the forecasting part of your chart can also be influenced strongly by Karmic Debt numbers. Found as an Essence cycle, a Karmic Debt number can be particularly difficult, and Period and Pinnacle cycles are also vulnerable to Karmic Debt. However, your Challenge Numbers, which only use reduced numbers, including reduced Master numbers, for calculation, do not have an associated Karmic Debt.

In general, we can say that the following numerology evaluations could also be associated with a Karmic Debt:
  • Life Path (Destiny) Number
  • Name (Expression) Number
  • Soul's Urge (Heart's Desire) Number
  • Personality (Inner Dreams or Outer Personality) Number
  • Day of Birth
  • Period Cycles
  • Pinnacle Cycles
  • Essence Cycle
  • Balance Number
  • Maturity Number
  • Minor Heart's Desire Number
  • Minor Personality Number
  • Rational Thought Number
If you have a Karmic Debt Life Path number, for example, the impact will be felt repeatedly throughout your life cycle, but not continuously.

If your Expression number is a Karmic Debt number, you will feel its effect on a more continuous, but less dramatic, basis, affecting mostly your professional/productive life, i.e. your career.

If your Heart's Desire number is a Karmic Debt number, you will have a tendency to make bad choices and decisions in your lifestyle, including relationships, in accordance to the qualities of that particular Karmic Debt number.

If your Personality number is a Karmic Debt number, its influence will be mostly felt in social interaction and health issues. This can be anything from simply making bad impressions to clumsy remarks, bad taste in clothing, etc. Health can also be affected.

Found as a Maturity number, the Karmic Debt is felt particularly strong during your late teens and early twenties, as well as your late forties and early fifties (the mid-life crisis).

In all other areas of the personality part of the chart, including the Birth Day number, the affect is considerably less.

However, certain cycles in the forecasting part of your chart can be influenced strongly if a Karmic Debt number is found there.
For example, found as an Essence cycle, a Karmic Debt number can be particularly difficult.
The long-term cycles -- Period and Pinnacle cycles -- also are vulnerable to Karmic Debt numbers.

Personal Years, of course, can't have Karmic numbers, as they are always single digits.
Challenges can't have Karmic numbers, as they are also always single digits.

The good news is that when you are aware of your karmic numbers and understand their meaning, you are a warned man or woman, and therefore better protected than those who have not had the opportunity to be prepared.

When you are creating your Numerology chart, you may encounter the numbers 1, 4, 5 or 7. These single-digit numbers can be arrived at by adding a variety of two-digit numbers. For example, the number 1 can be derived by combining the double-digit numbers of 10 (1 + 0 = 1), 19, 28, 37, 46 -- all of which total to 10, and then reduce to 1. However, only in the case of 19 is a Karmic Debt indicated. Karmic Debts are also associated with the numbers 4, 5 and 7. These numbers can be preceded by an array of two-digit numbers as well, but when the 4 is preceded by a 13, the 5 is preceded by a 14 or the 7 by a 16, a Karmic Debt is also read as part of the single-digit interpretation.

The bottom line:

Working with a Karmic Number intensifies the issues that relate to that number. It’s not easy. It requires concerted effort and focused commitment. It’s testing you and requiring that you rewire the way you work with leadership, creativity, ego, achievement, and independence. The destructive path will feel much more “comfortable” since you’ve been there, done that. This time, you’re being asked to extract yourself from riding in that same rut in the road – you’re required to create a new way of working with these themes that have positive results for you and everyone around you.

Success comes from looking past your own needs to the needs of others. When you work toward independence, resisting the urge to be dependent or feel weak, you’ll begin to pay off this karmic debt. Of course, just being aware that you have a karmic debt will help you see a path for changing your life and changing your ways. After all, the 1 always promises a new beginning.

Karmic debt numbers indicate challenges and lessons faced in this lifetime. They also reveal the solutions to those challenges and the way to master those lessons. Awareness of your karmic debt numbers can help you recognize some of the patterns in your life and begin to change any negative patterns. By focusing on the positive attributes of these important numbers, you can transform your relationships and create greater harmony in all areas of your life.
